Poor Girl

poor girl. she closed her friendster’s blog. im guessing she was getting too much attention. Dear Brunei wishes her luck with her Scholarship Application and hopes that she succeed with her Psyhology Degree.

its better to speak out when you’re unhappy rather than to follow like a slave, for we, are not slaves.

Its fine to speak out but there's many systems and procedures in which she can do that, and of all, she chose a fatal one.

UBD Education

All I can say is that, the moment students stop complaining, is the moment UBD/MOE stop failing.

Whenever I hear arguments about the UBD education system, the best comeback they can come up with is “you’re getting the Education for free”

People gotta stop using that as an excuse.

Does that mean, because our education is free, UBD is allowed to land us a dead end job with no other choices? I dont think so.

Free education is not JUST in Brunei anymore. It has became standard to most of the major countries. So this “free education” is nothing special or unique, and it shouldnt be used anymore as an excuse for UBD or the MOE or the Government to suck.

Dude, like who are you kidding? Who started the thread, exactly who started the stream of complaining?

Complaining is useless. Pragmatic criticism is the word that you’re looking for.

And free education is not an excuse. I read a recent paper about French students SELLING SEX to pay for university education god damnmit, do you think there’s room for excuses?? I lost few friends throughout my years because they can’t afford to study, what makes you think that she deserves validity in what she has to say?

And listen to her, talking about killing herself yet wanting to live independently half way round the world, what is that all about? She better pray the government won’t trace her IP because the things she has said hurts so many feelings out there.

And where is the basis for you to say that free education is free in most countries? The last time I was applying for masters in Singapore, Australia and Malaysia, which constitute the major countries you would refer to, it isn’t free, and that includes degree education. Seriously, don’t argue just for the sake of it. You’re only embarrassing yourself. We don’t need another idiot revealing themselves so do take a step back.

And UBD and MOE is not failing. It’s just a character of bureaucracy, its pervasive anywhere you go, in any existing organisation. It’s even more radical here because of civil rights. I’m doing a module on that for god’s sake! And if UBD/MOE is failing, they would have gotten overthrown a year after they were erected and guess what, they’re still standing strong! And shame on you two, the fact that you can speak English and actually type comes from their commitment to educate us! That very organisations that you just dissed!

Free education IS actually special because it gives you a life chance to level yourself from the masses. It means you don’t have to do a part-time job in a chip shop like a colleague of mine just to bloody eat or serve men in their beds and satisfy their lust, all these to get that basic necessity of any human – to educate.

Dont you get it? She can complain all she want, she can go to UBD, UK, teach or be a retarded psychologist but people are upset that she said things like “have pride”, “face went ugly and red”, “or aku bunuh diri saja” and “akhir akhir jadi teacher saja. buang masa”. She made it sound like UBDians do NOT have pride and that studying in UBD and being a teacher so horrific she would rather die in hell. She’s well off having her own opinions but there’s no way you can get away with comparing teachers and UBD to a dead horse!

The government did not just choose overseas students now, did they? Do you even realise the extent to which you, as the rightful citizen of the country with Brunei trademark stamped on your birth certificate, are telling the world that the very earth you grow on “suck”?

And don’t tell MOE to do their job properly. Maybe it would actually help to dig your own graves so that the country can get rid of ungrateful people like you! If your statistics of “90% of their staff there either takes a nap, chit chat while drinking their tea and have ciggies outside the building” is correct, I don’t think there would be a country at all, you stupid. Mate, everywhere around the world people sneak off work whenever opportunity arises. Face-booking in the workplace, sex among employers, just name it. The difference is just the way they do it, either discreet or visible.

Dont be arrogant lah. You're not even in your ripe age, you can swear you will be a dilligent worker 24/7? Everyone have their moments.

And I thought I was the rebellious one.

Really people, read the news. If you think this is bad, you have no idea.

Hi, this is Shai. I am a proud graduate of UBD. I am here in good heart and apologise in advance if words that I use do not befit the situation. Although I feel deeply offended by what she said I do believe that it's age talking. So putting the emo issue aside, we highlight why she would lose her pride if she goes to UBD and then we blow this up to a logical proportion that people have opinions of UBD in both ends of the spectrum. Unfortunately she is not alone in her opinion and this should be the issue that need be focussed on I believe.

We can't see the forest for the trees.

This is where a measly suggestion comes. All of us keep our anger and emotions aside. We now take two steps back. We analyse instead of criticise. It is easy to blame because to think demands harder strength. Which also reasons why she blames.

The reason why I find this not a crime because the sin has not yet been committed. Just words typed in a blog by a young girl who, putting her emo aside, might well be a pioneering psychologist. Now we all know her chances are slim.

As usual, the lapse in judgement of a young naive bruneian gets cheered on for failure by other bruneians.

That is not the Brunei I envisioned. The Brunei I see has people who put their vendettas aside and reflect on the worse sides of society rather than shun them. This is why there is a growing gap between elitist and non-elitist. Rather than lambasting her mistake, she is misguided and needs to be taken under our wings. Us that we self-proclaim to know our roles in society. We think we are smart. I say she may most likely be smarter than me, given the chance to prove.

I no longer see CEOs having tea with carwashmen, or officers having lunch with shop assistants. We have lost the spirit of humanity because we rather criticise than analyse. We may never know, past her teenage angst she might turn out to be a great psychologist far smarter than me at least...if others fail to concede being equalled or surpassed. And I hope she does :)

I admit that Brunei is haven and she will be a much better place if her people treat each others as equal nomatter how much in the wrong they may be. Now let us all hope that we Bruneians have not done damage to deny this girl her chance to prove us wrong.

Flowers are beautiful when they are in bloom :) When a bud, don't judge its beauty.

Peace and Love and Equality for all. Just airing my neutral suggestion since the angle is quite lopsided from the many blogs that are cheering the downfall of a fellow young Bruneian.

Hey,
I've read dearbrunei's comments on the matter, and as I've said over there, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. What the girl did was wrong, it was true. But when it comes to things like this, there's no right or wrong.
On MOE, it's not just MOE but most civil service are like that (except teachers), :D, but at the same time when people like these exist, there are people who are so workaholic that they start work at 7 and come home at 6, and even brought work home with them.
Maybe, at this moment, she has already regretted what she has done. Maybe at this moment, she is frightened that she cannot even go to uk on scholarship, much less ubd on scholarship as well, as what she wrote (with her picture) was now being circulated all over the place, and even printed for ubd students (and perhaps staff) to read. Again, Brunei is a small place where nearly everybody knows everybody. Maybe at this moment, her parents found out from their colleagues on what she had done, which would probably cost her the precious government scholarship, and in effect, her future. We all have lessons to learn here, to remember to think before you write, and to think before you speak. We don't know. Let's just hope it is that way.

Welcome back amyheidi :)

I agree with what you say there.

Do you know what I find amazing though? I dont know you, not anyone who has dropped me emails and comments from every direction until 2-3 days ago.

Looking at the extent to which this thing has brought us together really carved a smile on my face.

Its this thing we share, the spirit of Brunei, that is exclusive only to our people. I feel closer to home now and I have all you people to thank <3

Hello shai 3belas,

Let me first and foremost say this:

If you've read my post. The Girl Who Told Us Off, you will see that I was in my most liberal words trying to explain what it is that I see that she didnt, or maybe she might but she hasnt quite comprehend it yet. That was the purpose of the post.

It was okay up until this post when I read what this person wrote. I thought he/she is adding pain to the shame, with the keywords I highlighted everywhere around the text.

I totally agree with you, there is no crime committed. But crime is not all that it takes to crack a heart.

Going to UBD may be seen 'less better' to some people, and I do apologize for my raw words here because obviously people are clear enough where I am on the litmus test. But relating this to having pride easily declares war against the people walking on the streets of Brunei. Quite frankly, that is where most people go. If UBD is bad, then where do ITB, technical schools and the art stream go?

It is bad enough that we have flaws in the system. Someone speaking in that tone really adds to the grief. The best people can do is help to promote the system and this means getting your hands dirty.

Criticism is ideal through analysis and practical efforts. Otherwise would be blaming.

I feel sympathetic that because all this, we are moving way too close to judging her personality and eventually her future. I read endless blogs out there and people have alot to say. But if she keeps it on the low, Im sure it will die down soon, or maybe try to write and think about peoples' feelings next time.

Congratulations anyway for the successful entrance and exit through UBD. It would be a dream to do a PHD there.

Thanks for the comment,

Fana
